Health Initiatives

Improving community health through trusted partnerships, public health education, newcomer support, vaccine outreach, and policy-focused work for Black health.

ACAO works to improve the health of the community. The program partners with Community Health Centre, Ottawa Newcomer Health Centre, and research institutions to situate Black health in policy discourses.

Health Programming

Community health, vaccine education, and newcomer support.

ACAO’s Health Initiatives bring together public health partners, medical professionals, community leaders, and service providers to support better health outcomes.

Vaccine Campaigns

When We Are Vaccinated: ACAO received $5,000 from the Public Health Agency of Canada to run the When We Are Vaccinated campaign, aimed at encouraging people to get vaccinated by emphasizing what we could do when we all got vaccinated.

Soccer for Vaccine: ACAO partnered with Ottawa Public Health to successfully organize a soccer tournament that saw over 300 vaccines administered to players and spectators.

Vaccine Seminars

ACAO successfully planned and delivered high-quality COVID-19 and HPV vaccine seminars that were attended and viewed online by more than 2,500 people.

The panel included top Black physicians and specialists in the country, as well as Ottawa’s top medical officer of health. The takeaway was that vaccines help save lives, and as a community, we have a role to play to combat vaccine-related hesitancy.

Access to care

Newcomer Health Centre

ACAO partners with academia and other organizations to provide adequate access to healthcare for the community, including working with Newcomer Health Centre to help newcomers find family physicians and access other services.

  • Healthcare access for newcomers
  • Family physician connection support
  • Partnerships with community and research institutions

Health work is community work.

Through partnerships, education, and targeted outreach, ACAO helps advance health awareness and access for African, Caribbean, and Black communities.
